Progressive Muscle Relaxation

– E. Jacobsen

The origin of the word “relaxation” points to the act of releasing tension, both physical and mental. Just as a rope returns to its natural state when it is loosened, relaxation allows us to return to calmness and balance. It is a process of letting go that restores energy and supports overall well-being.

In today’s fast-paced world, relaxation has become increasingly important. Progressive Muscle Relaxation (PMR) according to Edmund Jacobson is a well-established relaxation method that promotes deep relaxation through the conscious tensing and releasing of specific muscle groups.

Relaxation helps reduce everyday stress levels and supports the body in moving out of constant “fight-or-flight” mode. It serves as a balancing counterweight to daily demands and pressures. Through regular practice, it can support a reduction in stress-related discomfort, strengthen self-awareness, and foster a sense of self-efficacy and inner control.

PMR can contribute to:

PMR can help you become more aware of stress- and anxiety-loaded situations and consciously relax tense muscles in response. Through repeated practice and learned conditioning, relaxation can be triggered more easily over time. In this way, PMR may offer supportive guidance in challenging situations and become an additional tool in your personal repertoire for navigating obstacles.

Beyond specific stress- or anxiety-related situations, regular practice can also support general muscular relaxation and help reduce tension-related discomfort. This makes PMR a versatile method that can be applied individually to different life challenges. It is also easy to learn and can be integrated quickly into everyday life.

It is important to attend at least 80% of the sessions and to stay motivated to practice at home. Only through regular repetition is it possible to integrate relaxation sustainably into daily life..
